FRIEDRICH KITTLER’S LAST TALK AT SOPHIENSTRASSE 22 IN BERLIN [VIDEO]
It is no exaggeration to state that Friedrich Kittler has been the kind of philosopher (together with Empedocles, Deleuze and a few others) who literally actualized his doctrine while facing death.
Dying in a hospital in Berlin and sustained only by medical life support instruments, his final words were “Alle Apparate ausschalten”, which translates as “switch off all apparatuses”.
In that way he offered a grandiose real-life actualization of his famous dictum: “Only that which is switchable exists” or alternatively: “Only that which can be switched, can be” (in german: “Nur was schaltbar ist, ist überhaupt”).
Logico-moral conclusion: Anything that can’t be “switched” can’t really “be,” at least under our current technical conditions…
